On Christmas day, I went to a party. The host was Lt. Koo. He invited me and two ladies who are musicians. Both are in orchestras. One is a cellist and the other plays the viola. I thought we would drink red wine and talk about music all night long, but what I found on the table were bottles of vodka, whiskey and rum. We drank a lot and got quite drunk. But also we had listened to a lot of music and shared our feelings.

Next day, I suffered from an awful hangover.

내가 이번 주 무엇을 했더라? 잘 기억이 나지 않을 지경이다. 크리스마스이브에는 도서관에 갔었고, 크리스마스 당일에는 문을 연 도서관이 없어 이곳저곳을 전전하다가 카페에 들어가 책을 읽었다. 믿었던 카이스트 도서관마저 배신을 했다. 학문의 전당인 대학의 도서관이 문을 닫다니. 크리스마스 파티 날, 나는 구 중위 집에서 신세를 졌다. 아무리 취해도 출근만은 하겠다고 호언장담했던 선배를 ‘집에 놔두고’ 나 혼자 출근해야만 했다. 그날 저녁 사무실 회식이 있었다. 술자리가 펼쳐졌지만, 나는 바이올린 레슨을 핑계로 한 시간 만에 자리를 털고 일어났다. 레슨은 브루흐에 집중하고 있다. 오늘은 공주로 논어 수업을 들으러 갔다. 웬 젊은 학생이 수업을 받고 있어서 잠시 기다려야 했다. 옆에 앉아 슬쩍 들어보니 주자의 ‘대학장구서’를 배우고 있었다. 이인(里仁)편의 첫 다섯 장을 공부했다. 이후에는 바이올린 연습 그리고 복싱. 운동하러 갔더니 마침 사람들이 체육관 문을 닫으려는 참이었다. 여기도 연말 분위기를 내는지, 관장이 술 한 잔 사겠다고 했다나. 문단속을 떠맡고 사람들을 보내줬다.

내일은 베토벤 9번을 듣는다.
