Kim Suhwan’s special lecture on the definite article.

Every time Suhwan gives me corrections or comments for my writing, I do not copy and paste, but re-write them in my own words to demonstrate how carefully I review them. This time, however, I post his comment as it was given to me since it seems to be a special lecture into which he put a lot of effort.

    the sun, the human race

the seaside, the seashore, the beach

Two aircraft are flying in the sky.
When I woke up there was a bright blue sky.

The computer has revolutionized publishing.
    Computers have revolutionized publishing.
The computers have revolutionized publishing.

She’s been appointed (the) head of the company.
She’s been appointed a sales manger.
‘the position/post/role of’ 등 다음에 직함이 오면 정관사를 안 쓴다.
Dr. Simons has taken on the position of Head of Deparment.

the late Buddy Holly, the ambitious Caesar, the artist William Turner
단, old, good 등 평범한(?)
    honest Dick

    the rich = rich people
the true = truth, the good = goodness, the beautiful = beauty

    We met on Saturday.
They arrived on the Saturday after my birthday.

Seoul Station, Heathrow Airport, Hyde Park, Fifth Avenue, Barack Obama
the Nile, the Strait of Magellan, the Suez Canal, the Pacific, the Bahamas, the Sahara, the Mayflower, the New York Times, the Economist, the White House, the British Museum
    the Alps, the United States
the Smiths (스미스 씨네 일가/스미스 씨 내외)
-I met George Bush yesterday. -You mean the George Bush?

Who on earth would venture out in weather like this?
그러나 ‘영화를 보러 가다’는 go to the theater
